Required Skills:
- Degree (Masters of Science) in Environmental Science, Agriculture, or related field of study
- Considerable experience in environmental or agronomy services, agri-environmental conservation projects, and climate change mitigation or adaptation in agriculture.
Or
- Degree (Bachelors of Science) in Environmental Science, Agriculture, or related field of study
- Extensive experience in environmental or agronomy services, agri-environmental conservation projects, and
climate change mitigation or adaptation in agriculture.
- Demonstrated equivalencies will be considered.
- Considerable experience in program or policy development and management;
- Considerable experience in project management involving a diverse set of partners and deliverables;
- Considerable experience and understanding of agriculture industry related to environmental conservation;
- Considerable experience in computer applications including Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word and ArcInfo GIS software;
- Must have excellent skills in project management, communication, conflict resolution, organization and extension practices;
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
Job Description:
The PEI Department of Agriculture and Land aims to encourage the development of an innovative, diverse and inclusive workforce which enables the organization to realize its goals. The Agriculture Climate Action Specialist is the Department lead on policy and program development related to climate change and provides advice and recommendations to Management and Senior Management, as well as to the industry and the public regarding climate change. This specialist will serve as the Department liaison with key contacts and stakeholders in the provincial and federal government, industry, and academia. Duties include:
- Apply and maintain knowledge and expertise related to climate change as it relates to agriculture; including knowledge and expertise related to agricultural greenhouse gas production, greenhouse gas quantification, mitigation, adaptation and relevant policy and programming initiatives;
- Develop, maintain and facilitate working relationships and networks with other agencies and groups engaged in climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies in PEI and throughout Canada, as it relates to agriculture;
- Collaborate and coordinate efforts with the PEI Climate Action Secretariat and the PEI Community of Practice;
- Apply project management skills in leading climate change initiatives through development to implementation, including developing project charters, establishing a project teams, overseeing resources and scheduling, and implementing and closing projects;
- Conduct comparisons to agriculture and climate change program models in other jurisdictions with the inclusion of policy, budgetary, financial, administrative and human resource considerations;
- Identify, develop, and prepare proposals for opportunities for the Department to participate in Climate Change Programming related to agriculture;
- Research and provide recommendations and briefing material about carbon pricing and carbon markets as it relates to agriculture;
- Prepare briefing material and advice for Management related to climate change in agriculture;
- Assist Senior Management and other colleagues in the appropriate application of the Climate Change Lens as part of the development of Executive Council and Treasury Board memorandums;
- Perform, initiate, partner and/or collaborate in climate change research, development, and demonstration projects that will result in increased understanding of greenhouse gas mitigation as it relates to new or existing agricultural on-farm beneficial management practices.
- Develop and manage agri-environmental programs that are related to Climate Change adaptation or mitigation
- Manage the PEI Department of Agriculture and Land’s Provincial Weather Monitoring Network;
- Other duties as required.
Wages:
$32.57 - $40.70 per hour
